8 Weeks Before

Create a moving budget — movers, supplies, deposits

Research and get quotes from at least 3 moving companies

Start decluttering — donate, sell, or toss items you don't need

If renting, notify your landlord per lease requirements

Start a folder for moving-related receipts and documents

6 Weeks Before

Book your moving company or reserve a rental truck

Start packing non-essential items (seasonal, storage, decor)

Make a list of everyone who needs your new address

Research new area — schools, doctors, dentists, vets

Order packing supplies — boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers

4 Weeks Before

Confirm moving company details — date, time, cost

Pack room by room, labeling every box with contents and destination room

Transfer medical and dental records; update prescriptions

Notify your employer of your address change

Arrange to transfer or set up utilities at your new home

2 Weeks Before

Confirm utility transfer dates — electric (ComEd), gas (Nicor), water, internet

File a change of address with USPS (usps.com)

Pack a "first night" box — toiletries, sheets, towels, phone chargers, snacks

Clean out refrigerator and pantry — use up perishables

Take measurements at the new home for furniture placement

1 Week Before

Confirm moving day details — arrival time, parking, elevator access

Defrost freezer if needed

Pack suitcases with a few days of clothes (like you're traveling)

Back up your computer and important files

Prepare an envelope with cash for movers' tips

Moving Day

Do a final walkthrough of the old home — every room, closet, garage, attic

Meet the movers and walk them through priorities

Read meters at both homes for final utility billing

Collect all keys, garage remotes, and access codes from old home

Set up beds and unpack the "first night" box before anything else

First Week After

Unpack kitchen and essentials first

Update your driver's license and vehicle registration (IL requires within 90 days)

Register kids for school if changing districts

Locate the main water shutoff, circuit breaker, and gas valve

Change locks or rekey — you never know who has old copies
